About the workshop
Every piece begins as raw metal
Ely Greenhut has been making personalized jewelry by hand for more than five decades. Not drawn on a computer and sent out to a machine: drawn on paper, sawn out of sheet metal he pours and rolls himself, then filed and polished at a single bench in Tzfat, Israel.
The workshop in Tzfat
One bench. One pair of hands. The metal is refined, melted and rolled here. The designs are drawn here. The sawing, filing and polishing happen here too, and nowhere else.
From raw metal to your name
01 / Refined
Gold and silver arrive as ore and raw nuggets from the mine. They are refined down to pure pebbles before anything else can happen.
02 / Poured and rolled
Pure 24 karat pebbles go into a graphite crucible with alloy and come out as 14 karat gold. The liquid metal is poured into an ingot mould, then rolled down into sheet.
03 / Drawn by hand
Every layout is drawn by hand, one design at a time. Your names, your spelling, your curves. There is no template and no CAD file behind it.
04 / Cut by hand
The design is sawn out of the sheet with a jeweler’s saw, drilled out from the inside, then filed and polished until it is finished.
What “handmade” should mean
A great deal of jewelry sold as handmade is drawn in CAD and cut by a laser or a motorized machine. In a photograph it looks close. In your hand it is a different object.
Nothing here is made that way. There is no CAD file, no laser and no 3D printer in this workshop. The drawing on the left became the piece beside it, by hand, with a saw.
Our designs are never discontinued.
They are simply retired.
